WHAT IS IGNITE?
Ignite is one of the most exciting, internationally recognized pitch competitions for Canadian technology, innovative or inventive entrepreneurs. Now in its sixth year, the Ignite Pitch Competition looks to award upwards of $125,000 of seed funding to successful entrepreneurs. To date, Ignite has awarded over $300,000 in prize money and thousands of advisory hours to help companies start, grow, succeed.
Ignite is organized by Spark Centre and supported by several municipalities and businesses across Durham Region. Ignite begins with a pitch school and will end with an extraordinary finale celebrating the winners. Our goal is to Ignite a startup community in Durham Region. Together, we hope to inspire, bring visibility and support entrepreneurs, ultimately creating jobs and economic wealth for Durham Region. By highlighting the local resources available to startups, we can show our entrepreneurs that Durham has everything they need to successfully start and grow their companies.
Spark Innovation Centre is looking for technology, innovative or invention-based entrepreneurs who are looking to launch, develop and grow their businesses in Durham Region. This category is geared towards start-up and scale up companies incorporated in Canada that have an original innovative technology.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for passionate, hard-working entrepreneurs and innovators who want to make an impact in the energy industry and collaborate with them! This category is geared towards start-ups and scale-ups incorporated in Canada that have an original technology in the early-stage, that is innovative and not an already existing product or service available for sale. The product or service should provide a solution to a problem within the scope of OPG, especially the scope of their Inspection & Maintenance, Darlington Refurbishment Environment, or Electrification Development departments.

Spark Centre category:
For innovators who are in the ideation or discovery stage of their business.
Ideation – exploration stage
Discovery – testing ideas, proof of concept, identifying customers
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) category:
This year, there are 3 distinct challenges that OPG is looking for solutions to:
– Inspection and Maintenance
– Darlington Refurbishment
How does it work?
All innovative, technology or invention based startup companies are invited to apply between August 27 and September 28, 2018. 30 applications will be selected to take part in a mandatory Pitch School, then invited to present their 3 minute pitch to our Power Panel at the Pitch Competition. Finalists from the Pitch Competition will move on to the Boardroom Competition.
Applicants interested in the OPG categories will be invited to attend separate Pitch Schools, Pitch Competitions and Boardroom Competition with an OPG Power Panel.
In December 2018, 5 companies will be named the official Ignite winners.

What category do I apply to?
Spark Centre Category – For innovators who are in the ideation or discovery stage of their business.
– Ideation– exploration stage
– Discovery– testing ideas, proof of concept, identifying customers
Beijing FSP Category – For innovators who are in the validation, efficiency or scale stage of their business.
– Validation– prototype, customer verified, initial orders, Go-to market strategy, pursuing angel funding
– Efficiency– Initial market traction, scaling sales and marketing, financial forecasting, pursuing early stage VC
– Scale– Validated product and market; customer growth, established management team, pursuing later-stage investment
Ontario Power Generation Category – For innovators who want to make an impact in the energy industry and collaborate with OPG. This category is geared towards start-ups and scale-ups that have an original technology in the early-stage, that is innovative and not an already existing product or service available for sale. The product or service should provide a solution to a problem within the scope of OPG, especially the scope of their Inspection & Maintenance, Darlington Refurbishment, or Environment departments.
Applicants in all categories must be 18+

What do I win?
Details of winnings vary by category.
Spark Centre Category: $25,000 CDN and work space at Spark Centre’s head office, The Loft in Downtown Oshawa for six months. Additional support from Spark Centre as a client including executive coaching, functional advisory and day to day operational support.
Ontario Power Generation Category: The winners of the OPG categories will each receive an opportunity to collaborate with Ontario Power Generation in addition to $25,000 CDN of seed funding to further develop their idea.
All winnings are subject to terms & conditions.
To be eligible to enter the Competition, the Applicant hereby certifies that: 1) their proposed technology, invention or process is a lawful, original and novel innovation that generated sales of no greater than $1 million (CDN ) over the last 12 months and the Applicant is or intends to become an early stage company focusing on innovation; 2) the technology, invention or process is their own work and they have the sole right to submit the innovation to the Competition; 3) they are above the legal age of majority in Ontario; 4) they accept and will adhere to these Competition Terms and the Spark Competition Terms; 5) they are not currently employed by OPG or an OPG subcontractor or supplier; and 6) if chosen as the winner of the Competition, they will execute the agreement attached as Schedule A to these Competition Terms and can grant all required licenses to OPG in respect of the innovation.
